It all started with Lent back in 2012. I was working at a job with a good friend of mine and we decided we were going to participate in Lent together. Instead, of giving something up, we decided we were going to gain something. We decided that for 40 days, we were going to learn a new word a day and use it at least once that day. Needless to say, this got quite boring after the first week or so and it eventually just died out. However, there was one aspect of it that intrigued me and I wanted to keep it going.
I decided that I was going to continue this short lived journey by myself, and with more than just words. Why not learn how to deep fry a turkey? Or maybe how the game of squash is actually played? I realized I wanted to learn, try, do, or see something new everyday. This gave me the opportunity to still continue my Lent promise in a way that was fun for me.
Once Lent was over, I didn’t want to stop. So I didn’t. I continued my journey of ‘New’ everyday since then and have since learned, tried, done, or saw something new for well over 2000 days. It wasn’t until recently that I kept this little game of mine to myself. And not for any particular reason other than I never thought about it. It just became part of my life. This all changed one day at a new job. We had the dreaded day of ‘sitting around the table and introduce yourselves and say something about you that not a lot people know about.’ Something not a lot of people know about me? This is going to take awhile. I’m a pretty private person but things I’m not private about, everyone knows. There’s really no in-between. So what could I say? It’s my turn. I introduce myself and then it hits me… I share this. “Since 2012 I’ve made a decision to learn, try, do, or see something new everyday and I haven’t stopped since.” Everyone roared! “WOW!” “That’s so amazing!” “You haven’t missed one day yet? That’s crazy!” “Tell us some of the things you’ve done!” I didn’t expect any of this reaction as I mentioned before, this became my norm.
Let’s fast forward to about a week ago. I’m part of a really awesome Facebook group called Goal Digger Podcast Insiders, run by none other than Jenna Kutcher. One of the lovely ladies made a post for us to share our social media handles to support one another, and to add in a random fact about ourselves. Once again, I shared this as my random fact and the response I got was amazing! These boss ladies started following little ol’ me to follow along on my journey. The only issue? I NEVER talk about it! Then… LIGHTBULB.
For awhile now I knew I wanted to start a blog of my own but didn’t know about what. I couldn’t imagine writing about fashion or beauty, and I don’t know enough about being a lifestyle blogger to even go down that road. Once I started thinking about how I was going to start sharing my journey, it all clicked. This is it. This is the place where I am going to share all my big NEW moments, and maybe some of the little ones, too. So my NEW for today? Starting a blog! Now stay tuned for all the goodies to start rolling in.
Thank you for reading this far and I hope you follow along with me while I continue my journey of NEW. I plan to focus on food, spaces, and places, in the Hudson Valley region of NY as this setting has my heart and I want to share it all with you. Also, follow along with me on instagram @mau5tache. So, nice to meet you, and I can’t wait for us to travel together!
